The Crab Pot Culture- Catching Herring in Northeastern North Carolina

Catching herring in northeastern North Carolina can be a rewarding experience for both novice and expert anglers. The region is blessed with rich water bodies, home to an abundant herring population. This article looks into the intricacies of herring fishing, including the optimal seasons, techniques, baits, and even how to process and cook your catch.

Herring migration typically peaks in the spring months, from March to April. During this time, herring move from saltwater habitats to freshwater streams and rivers to spawn, presenting an excellent opportunity for anglers to catch them in large numbers. Monitoring the water temperatures is crucial, as herring prefer waters ranging between 45-55°F (7-13°C)

Focus on areas where streams and creeks meet rivers, as these are hotspots for herring. Bridges and piers can also be fruitful spots.

Herring can be caught using various techniques, including cast netting and dip netting. Setting up a fish weir, a type of fish trap, can also be effective, but requires more preparation.

Although herring are primarily caught using nets, if you prefer rod and reel, using small shiny lures that mimic small fish or insects can be effective.

A medium-light rod paired with a spinning reel is ideal. When using nets, a cast net with a 4-6-foot radius should suffice. Make sure to have a fishing bucket or cooler to store your catch.

Once you have your catch, it’s time to process the herring. Here’s a step-by-step guide:

  1. Scaling with a fish scaler or the back of a knife to remove the scales, working from the tail towards the head.
  2. Gutting: Make an incision from the anus to the head and remove the entrails.
  3. Filleting: Lay the fish on its side and cut along the backbone to remove fillets.
  4. Rinsing: Rinse the fillets under cold water to remove any remaining guts and scales.

After processing, you’re ready to cook. Here are some recommendations:

Herring Roe

If you happen to catch female herring laden with roe, consider pan-frying the roe with some butter, garlic, and parsley for a delicacy rich in Omega-3 fatty acids.

That’s Herring

Smoking is a traditional method of preparing herring. For a rich and hearty flavor, brine the herring fillets for several hours before smoking them over a woodchip smoker.

Grilled Herring

Marinate the fillets in lemon juice, olive oil, and herbs before grilling them for a few minutes on each side for a simple yet delicious dish.

Catching herring in northeastern North Carolina is a tradition steeped in history and offers a rewarding fishing experience, especially during the spring spawning season. Remember to adhere to local fishing regulations and only take what you can use to help preserve the herring population for future generations. Armed with the proper knowledge and techniques, you’re well on your way to enjoying the thrill of herring fishing and the delight of a fresh herring meal.
